Abstract

"In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts themselves present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major theoretical and practical contributions. This volume of self-selected papers recognises Andy Young's major contribution to the study of face perception, for which he received the BPS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Focusing on his work in facial expression recognition, a specially written introduction gives an overview of his work and contextualises the selection in relation to developments in the field during this time. Divided into five distinct sections, the book covers work on both theoretical and experimental approaches to facial expression recognition, neuropsychology, functional brain imaging, and applications of research. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of cognitive psychology or neuropsychology interested in face perception. It will also appeal to those with an interest in the highly varied applications of the research and provide insight into a number of clinical disorders"-- "In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts themselves present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major practical theoretical contributions.Andy Young has an international reputation as an eminent scholar and pioneer in the field of face perception. This selection brings together some of his best work over the last thirty years.A specially written introduction gives an overview of his career and contextualises the selection in relation to changes in the field during this time. The first section on 'Theoretical Perspectives' will explain the background to research on facial expression and the types of question that have been addressed. These include the relation between perception of facial identity and expression, how expressions are perceptually represented, and multimodal contributions to interpreting other people's emotions. The second section 'Experimental Approaches' will explain the key techniques and tests of important theoretical questions. The next part will give examples of selective impairments affecting fear or disgust recognition from face and voice, and cases with more general problems in recognising emotion. These offer important evidence for the resolution of theoretical questions raised in Part 1. The fourth section looks at a combination of functional brain imaging and experimental methods to investigate the neural representation of facial expression. Finally, the last part will take methods from the other parts of the book and apply them to investigating some of the factors that may underlie different types of clinical or everyday problem and bringing out potential implications for treatment. The book enables the reader to trace developments in facial expression recognition over the last thirty years. It will appeal to anyone with interests in these areas as well as being an invaluable resource for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in face perception or visual cognition. "--

Abstract

"As humans, we are highly tuned to faces. We are very good at finding faces in our visual environment, we enjoy looking at them, and even find it difficult to ignore them. One reason for this is that we can extract a wealth of social signals by looking at someone's face. Hairstyle, facial hair and bone structure, for example, can convey a person's gender. Hair colour, skin complexion and adiposity provide clues to age. Facial expressions can convey a person's emotional state, and the direction a person's eyes are pointing indicates what holds their focus of attention in the immediate environment. Most importantly, however, our faces indicate who we are: they provide the primary visual means by which people can be identified, and for distinguishing one person from another"--

Abstract

"What is a face and how does it relate to personhood? Approaching Facial Difference: Past and Present offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the many ways in which faces have been represented in the past and present, focusing on the issue of facial difference and disfigurement read in the light of shifting ideas of beauty and ugliness. Faces are central to all human social interactions, yet their study has been much overlooked by disability scholars and historians of medicine alike. By examining the main linguistic, visual and material approaches to the face from antiquity to contemporary times, contributors place facial diversity at the heart of our historical and cultural narratives. This cutting-edge collection of essays will be an invaluable resource for humanities scholars working across history, literature and visual culture, as well as modern practitioners in education and psychology."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
